City of Palm Springs and Prairie Schooner Property Owner Settle Lawsuits Over Property

Staff & Wire Reports

The City of Palm Springs and Nexus Companies are pleased to announce that they have reached a mutual resolution and settlement of two long-standing lawsuits previously pending between them with respect to the “Prairie Schooner” property.

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, the owner of the property (a Nexus affiliate) has agreed to pursue the development and construction of a hotel project at the property, and, in connection therewith, the City has agreed to expedite its hotel entitlement application in a manner consistent with applicable land use and environmental processing requirements, including public participation requirements.

The settlement agreement also calls for a potential pedestrian walkway connection from the hotel/Convention Center to the downtown area to be constructed in conjunction with the hotel.

The settlement comes after months of discussions among City officials and nexus representatives aimed at exploring a mutually beneficial resolution that would enable development of the site to proceed and allow the parties to focus their respective efforts on bringing a new project to our downtown area and the citizens of Palm Springs.

Said Mayor Christy Holstege, “A hotel at this site is what the City originally wanted, and this agreement enables that to happen. This will be a tremendous boost to our Convention Center and downtown, especially as we re-emerge from the COVID pandemic. In addition to providing yet another choice for our residents and visitors, this hotel will bring TOT revenue to fund important services for our residents.”

“We believe this is a responsible solution that reiterates our continued commitment to investing in the City. We look forward to working with City staff, officials and the public in our pursuit of what we anticipate will be an incredible and exciting new hotel project,” said Nexus Companies President, Cory W. Alder.
