After a summer break, Sunnylands, the iconic 200-acre estate in Rancho Mirage, is ready to welcome visitors once again starting September 11. This season’s lineup is packed with exciting events and activities, all set against the backdrop of a property that has played a pivotal role in American diplomacy and culture. The re-opening offers not just an opportunity to enjoy the estate’s beauty but also to delve into the legacy of its former owners, Walter and Leonore Annenberg, whose vision continues to shape Sunnylands today.

A Season of Culture and History

The new season at Sunnylands begins on September 11 with the return of the popular 90-minute guided Historic House Tour. This tour provides a fascinating look at the architecture, art, and design that define Sunnylands while also offering stories about the Annenberg’s legendary hospitality and their influence on American society. From the intimate gatherings of world leaders to the opulent New Year’s Eve parties, visitors will gain insight into the lives of two individuals who played a significant role in shaping modern diplomacy and culture.

For film lovers, the Films in the Gardens series returns on September 13. The series features a selection of movies screened outdoors in the serene setting of Sunnylands’ gardens. The September series runs for three consecutive Fridays, offering a perfect evening out in one of the most beautiful locations in the Coachella Valley.

In addition to the tours and film series, the exhibition Variations to a Theme: William Haines at Sunnylands is back for another season. This exhibition highlights the custom furniture and décor designed by the Hollywood designer specifically for Sunnylands, showcasing the luxurious and tasteful aesthetic that the Annenbergs brought to their winter home.

Looking ahead, Sunnylands will host its annual celebration of Coachella Valley Days of Los Muertos, along with the November launch of its popular outdoor wellness programs, guided estate tours, workshops, and more. These activities are designed to engage the community while honoring the cultural traditions of the region.

The Annenbergs: A Legacy of Philanthropy and Diplomacy

Walter and Leonore Annenberg were more than just prominent figures in society; they were extraordinary philanthropists and public servants who left an indelible mark on American history. Walter Annenberg, a media mogul and diplomat, served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1969 to 1974 under President Richard Nixon. His contributions to education, culture, and public service were recognized with numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Leonore Annenberg was equally influential, serving as Chief of Protocol for the United States under President Ronald Reagan. Her commitment to public service and the arts earned her several accolades, including the National Medal of Arts, which she shared with her husband.

In 2001, the Annenbergs established The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, ensuring that their estate would continue to serve as a sanctuary for national and international leaders to meet in privacy and discuss pressing global issues. The Trust also opened the estate to the public, offering a rare opportunity to explore a place steeped in history and dedicated to the pursuit of world peace.
