In a significant move that underscores the importance of tourism to the Palm Springs economy, the Palm Springs City Council approved a new five-year management agreement with Oak View Group (OVG360), marking a pivotal shift for the Palm Springs Convention Center. This agreement, effective September 28, 2025, marks a new era of potential economic growth, increased tourism, and enhanced competitive positioning for one of the region’s most vital economic drivers.

During the meeting, Mayor Ron deHarte described the deal as a “generational investment in Palm Springs’ economic future,” emphasizing that the partnership and proposed $125 million renovation will “modernize our Convention Center, boost tourism, and bring millions in new spending to our hotels, restaurants, and businesses.”

A Strategic Partnership and Investment

Under the terms of the approved contract, Oak View Group will assume control from the current operator, AEG Management Palm Springs, upon the expiration of their current contract in September. The new agreement outlines a base fee of $250,000 annually for OVG, which will increase by $19,250 each year. However, the key financial incentive lies in performance-based bonuses, which allow Oak View Group to earn up to an additional $375,000 annually if specific revenue, occupancy, and client satisfaction metrics are met.

Highlighting Oak View Group’s commitment, the agreement also includes a substantial capital investment totaling $1.8 million for immediate and ongoing improvements to the Convention Center. A notable $1.2 million is expected within the first 15 days of the agreement’s effective date, with an additional $300,000 dedicated to transition services, and another $300,000 due on the first anniversary of the contract.

Greg O’Dell, president of venue management at Oak View Group, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We’re honored to have been selected by the City of Palm Springs to manage the operations of the Palm Springs Convention Center and Bureau of Tourism. Our team is committed to enhancing the guest experience, driving economic impact, and ensuring the facility remains a premier venue.”

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The Convention Center already plays a significant role in the local economy, generating $44 million annually in direct attendee spending, supporting 892 local jobs, and contributing $5.1 million in tax revenue. Post-renovation projections anticipate a dramatic increase: attendee spending is forecasted to rise to $66.6 million annually, job creation is expected to expand to 1,302 positions, and annual wages are projected to increase from $31.1 million to $46.5 million, with tax revenue expected to grow to $7.6 million annually.

Wayne Olson, Chief Economic Development Officer for the city, emphasized during the council meeting that these enhancements represent a “critical piece of city infrastructure,” reinforcing the strategic goal of driving economic impact through increased tourism and events.

Enhancements and Competitive Edge

The Palm Springs Convention Center, spanning approximately 212,000 square feet of event space, including a ballroom and meeting rooms, will undergo significant enhancements as part of a $125 million renovation. These improvements are expected to significantly enhance the facility’s competitiveness in attracting large-scale national conventions and association meetings, which are crucial for maintaining year-round occupancy and economic stability.

A particular emphasis will be placed on target markets, including tech industries, sports events such as major pickleball tournaments, and national association gatherings. According to OVG representatives, these sectors offer substantial opportunities for increased event bookings and year-round facility use, which will significantly benefit the local tourism and hospitality industry during traditionally slower months.

Community and City Integration

The agreement also includes strategic provisions for local community benefits. City events like the Palm Springs International Film Festival and local nonprofit gatherings will continue to be hosted at the Convention Center at cost. The Bureau of Tourism, Visitor Center, and Welwood Murray Memorial Library will also see continued operational support under the management of Oak View Group.

Moreover, the deal underscores a strong commitment to local labor, as highlighted by a labor harmony agreement intended to ensure seamless collaboration with local unions and the employment of local residents, thereby providing stability and economic opportunities to the community.

Smooth Transition and Future Outlook

City Manager Scott Stiles and city council members praised the transparency and competitiveness of the selection process, which culminated in the choice of OVG due to its robust operational experience, attractive financial proposal, and strategic vision. OVG, already managing local venues such as Acrisure Arena and the soon-to-reopen Plaza Theatre, aims to seamlessly transition existing contracts, ensuring continuity and minimal disruption.

“This partnership is transformative,” Mayor deHarte concluded at the council meeting. “It’s a game changer not just for Palm Springs, but for the entire Coachella Valley.”
